Anson SmartAvalon House is the coastal residence of H&E co principal Chris Grinham, conceived as a grounded and restrained response to its bushland setting. A simple, cohesive palette of materials is layered throughout the home, with finishes left intentionally raw to enhance tactility and reflect the character of the surrounding landscape.
Large openings are carefully positioned to frame views outward, drawing the native environment into the interior living spaces. At the heart of the plan, a communal dining table anchors the home, acting as a focal point that connects the interior with the adjacent outdoor living area to form a single, fluid space.
The kitchen continues this material language through an integrated travertine stone sink, wire brushed and stained American oak joinery, and subtle brass detailing. Externally, strong rectilinear forms are softened by textured finishes, sitting comfortably within the sandstone context of the site. Internally, the main living space flows from west to east, offering uninterrupted views through to the pool and surrounding landscape beyond.
